There are several major social issues in the area
1 - Concentration of houses of multiple occupancy (HMOs) this encourages a transient population which undermines community cohesion
2 - As with all of Birmingham, there is a serious litter issue. This is partly caused by the current Birmingham City Council bin strike, but also, partly due to people's attitude of dumping waste in the area
3 - Exempt accommodation. This is a complex housing issue which when managed correctly can empower people, however, unfortunately when not managed effectively leads to serious social issues such as rising crime, drug selling and sex working. North Edgbaston suffers from this problem
4 - A lack of "being noticed" by Birmingham City Council. Employees of the Council admit that the area is often overlooked due to its proximity to Sandwell. This leads to underfunding of investment in roads, pavements, street cleaning and general maintenance
5 - The Hagley Road wall. It is strikingly noticeable that there is a privileging of those who live on the Harborne side of Hagley Road, over those who do not. Differences in street cleanliness, infrastructural investment and general policing become clear simply by crossing Hagley Road
6 - Ensuring our representatives, such as Councillors, MPs, police and the Council take these issues seriously. No taxation without representation
The aim is, therefore, to make us noticeable and matter.
